Dutch Mother and Son: Home Music Scene

Figure 1.--Here a Dutch mother is helping teach her son music. The boy is leaning to play the recorder. This photograph is undated, but we would guess the 1930s because of the lady's hair style and the style of the boy's suit.

Here a Dutch boy and his mother are working together. The boy is playing a recorder, not a flute. The recorder was used to help teach children music. Here mother is helping teach her son music in preparation for learning a musical instrument. This photograph is undated, but we would guess the 1930s because of te lady's hair style and the style of the boy's suit. A reader writes, "I think that if this is the 1930s, it would be the later 1930s--say, 1938-39, because of the shortness of the short trousers and the length of the long brown stockings. This boy is dressed very similarly to the boys in the North Brbant family--van de Wen (1946). But I'm not saying that the late 1930s is incorrect." Our reader raises some good points about the short pants and long stockings. The boy's siuit, however, look rather old fashioned for the 40s.
