This family portrait was taken in Jointville, Santa Catarina state (late-1930s or early-40s). We see Heindrich and Bertha Karnopp with their 19 grandchildren. They children look to range from 1 year old through the early-20s. The grandparents probably emigrated from Germany (around the 1880s-1890s). The family appears to be quite well off. They have a nice home and a well manicured yard. The children are well dressed and shod. At that time in Jointville, most of the children went barefoot. Not only are children all well dressed, the portrait was probably taken by a professioal photographer. It is not clear if this is a country estate or a suburban neighhborhood.
