American Boys' Lace Collar: Chronology--The 1880s

Figure 1-- This is a memorial cabinet card portait of a boy with bangs and a double breasted tweed suit with a lace collar. The center of the photo is raised and the edge has an ornate design. The photographer was Beckwith & Son located in Cleveland, Ohio. There is writing on the back dating the potrait to 1882. I believe the boy's name is Robert Goetz?? See if you can read all the writing.

Boys of various ages in the late-19th century might wear lace collars. We note both larger collars and lace collars by the early-1880s, before Mrs. Burnett wrote her famous book and the Fauntleroy craze began (1885). Here we see real lace collars and not the even larger ruffeled and usully cut out lace that became so popular in the 1890s. We note them being worn both with and without floppy bows. we begin to see larger lace collars in the 1880s. We note Henry Gates Hayes wearing a very large lace collar in 1881. This was the first really large lace collar we note. We also see two Rochester boys in 1884. They were worn before that, but as far as we can tell, they were not very common. It is a collar style common associated with the Little Lord Fauntleroy suits which became popular in the 1880s. Boys also wore them with dresses. Mrs. Burnett publised Little Lord Fauntleroy (1885). The illistrations with the book showed Cedric wearing lace collars. This created an associated between the lace collar and Little Lord Fauntleroy suits. And we seen many bore boys with lace collars after the publication of the book. Really large collars appeared at this time and steadily increased in size. The lace collars were at first very commonly, but we also begin to see ruffled collars without lace. We see many boys wearing Fauntleroy suits with lace collars. We also see lace collars on many other garments. A good example is Ralph Cope wearing a lace collar on his dress in 1888.
