American Boys' Lace Collars: Plackets

American lace plackets
Figure 1.--Fauntleroy styling was normally limited to the fancy blouses which often inclyded cut-out lace. These blouses often included matching plackets. Here we have a collar matching placket that wss not part of the blouse--a rareexample. The cabinet card here is undated, but the mount style and white whicker furniture dae it to about 1890. The studio nme iunclear, but the studio was located in in Maynard, Massachusetts.

While the fancy Fantleroy collars are often described as lace collars, actually very few of he American Fauntleroy collars were actual real bobbin/pointlace collars. They were mostly ruffled collars without any lace. There were lace collars, but they were rather rare in America. They were more common in England. Real lace was expensive. American mothers seem to have gone in more for size, spectcularly ruffled collars. We note lace collars done in many different styles and shapes. Bobbin/point lace was particularly varied. We note round, square, star, and other shapes--more varies than the ruffled Fauntleroy collar which were normally rectangular. We do see many Fauntleroy ruffled collars done with eyelet lace which of course is not true lace. Ruffled collars and eyelet lace was more standardized. We note many done as rectanular or square collars with back flaps. The back flaps of course were a element of sailor styling incorporated for some unknown reason with Fauntleroy blouses. The ruffled collars using eyelet lace of course were much larger than the actual lace collars done with point lace. Some ruffled collars incorporated real lace, often in the edging, but eyelet lace was much more common.
