Dating Studio Cabinet Card Mounts: Colors--Brown

Figure 1.-- A good example of a dark brown is an American card of the Hale children made in America during 1886. Dark mounts in several colors were poplar in the 1880s and early 90s. Click on the image for more information about the Hale children.

We note quite a number of dark brown mountss. They seem to have been fairly common. The ones we have noted are all dark. We have noticed shades ranging from chocolate to a redish brown. We have not noted light or even medium brown shades. Some had gold lettering, but we also notice white and other light shades. We notice a few cards with out the studio information. We are not yet sure of the chronology, but have begin to archive a number of dated images. We are not yet entirely sure about the 1870s. We think they first appeared in the 1870s, at least in large numbers. We notice many examples from the 1880s. A good example is Niran Bates Pope in 1883. This one had a brown back without any studio information. Another good example is an American card of the Hale children made in America during 1886 (figure 1). We note fewer dark brown mounts in the 90s when light-colored mounts become popular. The dark brown card on the previous page was dated 1891. The example we have noted are primarily American. We do not yet have much information on foreign countries.
