Dating Studio Cabinet Card Mounts: Colors--Maroon


Figure 1.-- Here we see a Minnesota cabinet card with a maroon mount taken in 1885. Ligh-colored cards became nore popular in the 1890s.

Marron and similared redish brown shades were a popular color for the card stock. This was one of the dark colors popuar for cabinet cards. We note them in the 1870s and 80s with light colored letters. This seems to ve the time when marron was most common. We hope to eventually estanlish a more precise chronology. Some were done with cold edges and lettering, but we are not sure about the time range of this. Here we see a Minnesota cabinet card with a maroon mount taken in 1885 (figure 1).
