English School Uniform: 1910s Chronology -- School Types

Figure 1.--This post-card back school portrait was mailed in July 1911. Itbwas proiban;y take in June. There is no information about the type of scchool. It looks to mus like a private pre-school. The children look to be about 4-5 yeras old. A reader writes, "If it was a pre-school in 1911 or so, I suspect the children were mostly from from well to do middle class families.

Some notable changes in uniforms and schoolwear were beginning in the 1910s. This depended somewhat on the type of schools. We can not always determine the tyoe of school, but often can. We still see knickers and knee pants, but this is the last decade these pants types were common. Private schools mostly required suits or blazers. These schools often had quite ekaborate dress and unifirm regulatioins. And oif course the children in orimary dchools could afford to ndress well. Some private schools allowed the boy to choose their suits, but this was becoming less common by the 1910s. It looks to us like the private boarding school on the previous page is about to introduce dark-colored suits to match their caps (figure 1). Suits were worn in the state primary schools, but were less commoin than in the 1900s. We see many younger boys wearing shorts pants. Knee socks were beginning to replace long stockings. Beginning in the 1920s we see boys in the primary and prep schools wearing short pants became standard.
