Figure 1.--This photo postcard was mailed from Bucarest,Romania to Fraulein Clara May in Dresden, Germany. It shows a boy wearing what we believe is a school uniform and his older sister wearing a sailor dress. We are not sure if this is also a school uniform, ut it could be. They may be Germans living in Romania. The card is written in German. The children are talking about telephones. Because it is a post card and King Carol I is on the stamp, we believe it was sent about 1910. There is a postmark, but the year is not clear.

There is a postmark, but the year is not clear. he card reads, " don't know if you have the translation of the text on the card to Clara May. The card was sent from Romania to Dresden, Germany. It was addressed: Fräulein Clara May, Gutzkowgasse 18 I [The "I" means in the German rule the first floor of a building, above the ground floor, for Americans of course it is the second floor.] Dresden, Germania. The message read, "Heutzutag benutzt man schon Telegraph und Telefon Doch das allerschoenste bleibt wenn man Ansichtkarten schreibt Herzl. Gruss Erich The address translates into English as: Miss Clara May, Gutzkow Alley 181, Dresden, Germany." The message translates, "Nowadays one uses already telegraph and telephone But the most beautiful thing remains if one writes picture post cards Best greeting. Erich." Note the rhyme 'schon"/"Telephon' and 'bleibt"/"schreibt'! And translated in English: "Nowadays one already uses telegraphy and telphone, However the most beautiful remains, writing picture cards. ..." Karl Gutzkow was a German author. The word gasse means alley or a narrow street. Karl Gutzkow (1811-78) was an influential writer, theater dramcist, and jounalist. From 1846 on he lived in Dresden. "Gutskow" instead of the correct "Gutzkow" probably is a typing error. In Dresden there is still a Gutzkowstrasse. Romania has a German minority since the 12th century (once 0.6 mullion strong). The 'Saxons' founded the cities Hermannstadt (Sibiu) and Kronstadt (Brasov) and they produced some famous people. Just 4 weeks ago an ethnic German had been elected as president of Romania, Klaus Werner Johannis, who was the mayor of Sibiu in Transylvania. Hermann Oberth, the father of space travel who worked with Werner von Braun to get the Americans to the moon, was born of ethnic German parents in Hermannstadt. Johnny Weissmüller (Tarzan) also was born in Romania in a German village. The same goes for Herta Müller, who received the Nobel Prize for (German) Literature a few years ago.
