Individual French Schools: Ecole Becon les Bruyeres (1930s)

Figure 1.-- This class looks be boys about 10-11 years old. There is a placard. It looks like 15Y/CCI. We have no idea what that means. We would guess it was taken about 1935. The boys wear a variety of sweaters and suits, only a few boys wear ties. Two boys wear smocks. One is a back buttoning smock, the other is side-buttoning smock. They all wear short pants and knee socks. We see both high-top and low-cut shoes. One boy wears closed-toe sandals. The hair cuts are about the same lebgth, except one boy who has a page-boy cut. We are not sure why three teachers are pictured with them, One of the men may be the school principal. The studio was Chapuis in Becon les Bruyeres.

Here we see several portraits at a Parisian boys primary school. We are not sure what the name of the school was, but it was an ecole in or near Becon les Bruyeres. This is a Paris neigborhood. We are not sure about the name of the school, but as the photographer was located in Becon les Bruyeres, we think the school was likely located there or nerarby. We have several class portraits of boys that look to be about 6 to 12 years of age. The boys were photographd with their vteachers, all male masters. They all look to come from the 1930s. The portrait of the younger boys may come from the late-1920s, but we think most come from the 30s, we would guess the mid-30s. The portraits all look to be taken at about the same time. They may be a collection of on boys school portraits, meanung that they were one year progressions. Perhaps readers can help refine our chronological estimate. The boys are variously dressed in sweates or suits. Most of the suits are lapel suits. We se some sailor suits, specially with the younger boys. Some boys wear dark smocks, but not bery many. We mostly see the back-buttoning style. The only real consistency is that all the boys are wearing short pants and knee socks. Quite a few boys are wearing high-top shoes, but the numbr of low-cut shoes rather consclusivly means these are 1930s portraits.

06-07 Year Olds

These are the youngest boys at the school for which we have photographs. The boys look to be about 6-7 years old. There is a placard tht says 147/6. We are not sure what that means. The 6 seems to be the form with the higher level meaning thevyounger boys. A few boys wear suit jackets, mostly without ties. More common were sweaters. Quite a few of these younger boys wear sailor suits. Some wear smocks, but it is difficult to tell just how many, perhaps five of the boys. Three boys have large white collars, two pointed collars, the other a Peter Pan collar. One boy at the extreme right seems to be wearing a tunic suit, a style tht was not very common at the time. All of the boys wear short pants and knee socks. Most of the boys wear high-top shoes. High-tops were going out of style at the time, but still common for younger boys. None of the boys wear sandals.

07-08 Years Old

The boy here look to be about 7-8 years old. There are 56 boys hre. This may be two classes of the same form (grade). The most destinctiv feature of the class here is the number of boys wearing smocks. we count about 15 boys, nearly a third of the class. The other portraits we have just show a few boys wearing smocks. Mist are the dark smocks, but we see one light-colored smocks as well. The other boys mostly wear sweaters. a few wear suit jackets. Two boys wear sailor suits. The boys wear short pants nearly all with knee socks. Almost all of the boys wear high-top shoes. One boy wears sandals without socks. Most of the boys have standard hair cuts. Two boys have page boy cuts.

09-10 Year Olds

These boys look to be abou 9-10 years old. We see the samebasic styles that we see in the other portraits at the school. The boys mostly wear sweaters. a few boys wear suit jackers. Two boys wear sailor suits. Quite a few boys wear smocks. They all apper to be the standard back-buttoning dark smocks, but with various cuts. One boy wears an unsual light-colored V-frot smock. We have never seen that style before. Almpst all of the boys wear short pants and knee socks. We are not sure if one boy is wearing long pants or knee pants and long stockings. Almost all the boys wear high-top shoes. A placard reads 11y/3. The 3 appears to refer to the form.

10-11 Year Olds

This class looks be boys about 10-11 years old (figure 1). There is a placard. It looks like 15Y/CCI. We have no idea what that means. We would guess it was taken about 1935. The boys wear a variety of sweaters and suits, only a few boys wear ties. Most of the seaters are not the type made to be worn with ties. Only two boys wear smocks.
