German School Activities: Outings

Figure 1.--Here we see a school group on an outing with a male teacher and perhaps one of the mothers. The photograph was probably taken about 1933-34. (I think the dealer reported 1933.) Notice four of the boys wear Hitler Youth uniforms, but without the caps. (this suggests that the capose not all that possible.) Notice some of the boys have their school satchels. I don't know if this means it was a school day or they used the satchle-like back packs to bring lunch and other items on the trip.

We think that these outings into the country led by teachers were very common in Germany. The photographic record certainly suggests this. We see very large numbers of these groups in the 1920s. Most are undated, but can be roughly dated by the clothes the boys are wearing. These outings may have been fairly common through the 1920s and early 30s. They may have declined after the NAZI take over (1933). This is suggested by the photographic record as most of the outings we have found with teachers seem to pre-date the NAZIs. Perhaps our German readers will know more about this. Teachers may have been concerned about being misunderstood when the NAZIs banned youth groups other than the Hitler Youth (HJ). Even informal assoviation may have seemed rather like organizing youth. Also the HJ program included hikes and other outings which may have reduced the interest among the boys in additional such outings. A reader writes, "I was struck by the relative formality of the boys' clothing even though they are on a hiking expedition. One or two of the boys seem to be wearing neckties. Most of the boys wear knee socks with their short trousers, but one boy is wearing black long stockings and (I think) a tie. I suppose they are simply wearing their ordinary school clothes rather than more informal garb for the outing. What age do you think these boys are? I'd say about 11 years old." Well we know that they are at least 10 years old. The photograph would have been taken in the early summer. Boys were generally unducted iun to the HJ in April on Hitler's birthday. We would say the boys mostly look about 10-11 years old. We would say most look like 10, but theressem to ne some 11 year olds as well. There seem to be a few younger boys as well.
