German School Activities: Fine Arts

Figure 1.--Here we see a group of of primary-age German children putting on a play at school, probably un the 1930s. We are not sure how many primary schools would have auditoriums/gymnasiums where they could stage plays.

We are unsure how Germany's very academically oriented schools approasched the fine arts. We have been able to find very little information about the fine arts in German schools. We have note images of classrooms from the first half of the 20th century. Most show a classroom largely filled with desks and benches facing the reacher at the front of the class. We have not noted specialist classrooms like art rooms, but our archive is limited. Presumably schools had art rooms, especially secondary schools. Vor have we noted much attention to music which s especially interesting given the importance of music in German life. Learning musical instruments seems more a home activity and pruvvate tuition than a school activity. Presunably some schookls had music rooms and organized performace groups, but we have little information. There must have been drama programs, although we do not know if it was class room or extra-curricular programs. We do see scenes from productions. Some schools seem to have has auditoriums where theatrical performances were staged. We know nothing about dance programs in German schools. We assume thast fine arts programs have been expanded in German schools after World War II. We have few derails at these times. We do not know how schools in East ad West Germany approched the fine arts.

Chronology

We are unsure how Germany's very academically oriented schools approasched the fine arts. We have been able to find very little information about the fine arts in German schools. We have note images of classrooms from the first half of the 20th century. Most show a classroom largely filled with desks and benches facing the reacher at the front of the class. We assume thast fine arts programs have been expanded in German schools after World War II. We have few derails at these times. We do not know how schools in East ad West Germany approched the fine arts. Presumably modern schools follow trends establish in West Germany.

Specific Disciplines

We have not noted specialist classrooms like art rooms, but our archive is limited. Presumably schools had art rooms, especially secondary schools. Nor have we noted much attention to music which s especially interesting given the importance of music in German life. Some plays may have been staged in the gymnasium, used as a multiple purpose room. We note quite a range of productions. Some are clearly productions with younger children. Costuming is often imaginative. The plays for the younger children seem rather creative. Given the age of the childrem this was not just secondary schools. We also see more sophisticated plays staged by secoindary-age students. We know nothing about dance programs in German schools.
