Greek Schools: Chronology--1930s

Figure 1.--Here we see a Greek school in 1934. It looks like younger boys at a secondary school. We are not sure if it is a private or state school. There was no uniform, but the boys were clearly expected to wear suits. The building in the background is presumbly their school. There is writing on the back of this photo postcard which probably identifies the school. Click here to see the inscription on the back .

We do not know a great deal about Greek education in the early-20th century yet. We believe that it was a fairly standard east and central European school system. It s primar features were set by a German influenced academic stanndard and and Greece's limited ability to fully fimance a public education system. As in most of Europe. Most children attended orimaru school, although not all children completed the full program. Mist villiages of any size had a primary school. Many were very basic facilities. Secondry schooling was far more limitd although of a high standard. Only children in the cities had access to secondary schools. Thus basically limited secondary eduction to the middle class. Schools were single gender intitutions except village schools too small for two schools. We have archived some 1930s school images giving us a look at some of the schools during the decade.
