We do not have a lot of chronological information on Japanese music instruction. We have nothing on the pre-Meiji resoratiion era of the early- and mid-19th centyury. The Meiji-Restoration launched a wide range of modernizing reforms (1870s). One iof these was the foundation of a modern public school system. We do not know at this time to what extent music became part of the national curticulum. We have found a cabinet card portrait, priobably dating to the 1890s. It shows very young school children, both boys and girls, learning musical instruments. We are niot positive this is a school grou because Japnese schiools were single gender at the time (except rural village schools). Most of the instruments are trafituional Jaoanese instrumenys, not Western instruments. It is possible this is some sort of music school outside of the new public school system. The children are photographed outdoors in what looks like a garden.
