Unidentified Japanese Boarding School (1930s)

Figure 1.--This unidentified school was photographed about 1930. We do not yet know the name of the school, but it was a boarding school or perhaps a hospice for boys attending a day school. It may have been located near Nagoya. This is a formal portrait of what looks like a class at the school. The boys seem about the sameage, about 15 years old.

This is another unidentified Japanese school. An unidentified student at the school has leftsome phtographs of the school and his family. He seems to come from a well-to-do family. We believe it was a boarding school in the 1930s, shortly before World War II. It may have been located near Nagoya. There is some writing on the photographs so we hopefully may be able to learn the name of the school. Before the War, most Japanese children did not progress beyound primary school. There were no secondary schools in rural areas. Thus capable children desiring to continue their education had to stay with ity relatives or attend boarding schools. We believe their public boarding schools. We are not sure, however, how a child earned a place in these schools are to what extent the parents were responsible for the costs. Hopefully we will learn more from the written text on the back of the photographs. The photographs include a formal and informal portrait as well as a view of their dormitory. Secondary schools at the time were single gender schools. The boys wore the standard Japanese cadet-styled uniform.

Unidentified Family

An unidentified student at the school has left some phtographs of the school and his family. One photograph shows the family with what looks to be his little sister. They are in a city park feeding deer. He seems to come from a well-to-do family. The father wears a smart suit. Mother is dressed in a kimono. This was common at the time. Men were much more likely to wear westrern dress. The family name may be indicated in some of the writing on the back of the photographs. The boy who is the student may have taken the snapshot.

The School

This is another unidentified Japanese school. Here we see a formal portrait of what looks like a class group on the school grounds (figure 1). We believe it was a boarding school in the 1930s, shortly before World War II. It may have been located near Nagoya. There is some writing on the photographs so we hopefully may be able to learn the name of the school. Another pgotograph shows the boys still in a class group in a more informal setting. They look to be in some kind of form room engaing in various leisure activities. The boys seem about the sameage, about 15 years old. Boarding

Before the War, most Japanese children did not progress beyond primary school. There were no secondary schools in rural areas. Thus capable children desiring to continue their education had to stay with city relatives or attend boarding schools. We believe their public boarding schools. We are not sure, however, how a child earned a place in these schools are to what extent the parents were responsible for the costs. We think most of the schools were for boys, but there were probably a few for girls as well. It is posssible that there were hostels for the children attemding city day schools. we are not yet sure about this. Hopefully we will learn more from the written text on the back of the photographs.
