Japanese Private Schools: Sagami Women's University Elementary School

Many Japanese universities sponsor schools at various levels. We are not entirely sure what the purpose of these schools are. They may be in part schools for the children of the staff. Or perhaps as in this case provide learning experiences for the students studying to be teachers. This may be especially important for a woman's collerge. Sagami Women's University is located in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture near Yokohama and Kawasaki. It has history of more than a century. It was originally founded as Japan Women’s School in 1900. The university’s motto is “Learn to Look. Learn to Discover,” and its educational mission is to foster women who are capable to contribute to the society and local communities through feminine perspectives, sophisticated sensibilities and flexible thinking. Sagami Women’s University Elementary School has a history of 70 years. Its venue is about 173,000㎡. The campus encompasses kindergarten, elementary, junior-senior high school, university and graduate school. The school has a abundance of nature on the campus fpr the children to enjoy and utilize in class studies. The goal expressed by the school is, "We educate 'Individuals who can act on their own.' The explain, "Through all activities, they develop their skills. All school subjects and activities are integrated for the best outcome. We have a reputation for providing students with valuable opportunities to develop their character and skills through participation in a wide range of activities. From the academic year 2020, we added research learning." The school had a winter and summer uniform.

University Sponsored Schools

Many Japanese universities sponsor schools at various levels. We are not entirely sure what the purpose of these schools are. They may be in part schools for the children of the staff. We suspect that academically oriented univerity staff are especially concerned with a quality education for their children. Or perhaps as in this case provide learning experiences for the students studying to be teachers. This may be especially important for a woman's collerge.

The University

Universities were all part of the Meiji reforms in the late-19th century. They were at first all male and women were not admitted. The first university opportunities for women came with the creation of women's universities. And Sagami was one of the first. Sagami Women's University is located in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture near Yokohama and Kawasaki. It has history of more than a century. It was originally founded as Japan Women’s School in 1900. The University's motto is "Learn to Look. Learn to Discover," and its educational mission is to foster women who are capable to contribute to the society and local communities through feminine perspectives, sophisticated sensibilities and flexible thinking.

The School

Facilities

The school campus has beautiful grounds with an abundance of nature for the children to enjoy and also utilize in class studies. There is also a school hall that can ve used for all kinds of performances. This invcludes a range of evernts, including performannnces for and by the students. We note choral, dancing, musical, and theatrical performances; lectures; and other events. It was a multiple use facility, also used as a gymnasium for sports. There was no installed seating.

Goals

The goal expressed by the school is, "We educate 'Individuals who can act on their own.' The explain, "Through all activities, they develop their skills. We have a reputation for providing students with valuable opportunities to develop their character and skills through participation in a wide range of activities. From the academic year 2020, we added research learning."

English Instruction

English is introduced to the children at a early point. English is important o Japan because it is an international language. And virtually no one outside of Japan speaks Japanese. The Japanese economy is based on foreign trade. Thus foreign languages are important for the Japanese. And English as it has become a kind of defacto international language which can be used in many countries besides just America, Britain, and other English speaking countries. So some attention is given to English beginning in orimary schools, both private and publuc schools. The school partivipates English language competitions. A study reports, "Today, we held the English speech contest in the elementary school at the xiāng mái. zi dà xué green hall. Representatives of each class competed. Every announcement was amazing and hard to put on. This year, the theme has changed a little, and it has been implemented in the following content. 2年生 「Favorite things」 3th grade -- swimmy, 4th grade -- about the prefectures of Japan, 5th grade -- about programming of sdgs challenges solving robot, and 6th grade -- my dream. In particular, the presentation of the 5・6th grade was stunning."

Culture

The School also promotes cultural traditions. One examole is the tea ceremony which is a very important cultural tradition in Japan. We see boys participating in the ceremony. There are girls also, They are grouped togther to the left. One boy writes, "From yesterday, the 6th grade has been invited by the people of the school who have taken care of us so far, and we are going to have a tea ceremony. I was nervous, and we were given tea and sweets. I got sweets. I had a tea. And I was polite to go. I was able to experience Japanese culture and make learning deeper." The boys seem more interested in the sweets than the tea, but it was the experience that was important.

Uniform

The boys wear all grey suits with grey felt hats and knee socks. (Some images look more like navy blue suits so the uniform may have recently changed.) Note the badge on the suit coat. The only color is the blue neckwear. The girls wear a similar uniform. The suit jackets are cut differently. The girls also wear a bow rather than a tie and a skirt rather than short pants. And the shoes are different. It all looks very English. The basis difference is the headwear. English boys and girls wear different headwear. It is common for Japanese children as we see here to wear the same heaeadwear. The English peaked school cap was once worn at quite a few schools, but is now much less common. The summer uniform was more informal, but agfain similar for boys and girls. The children wear the same white fabric hats. They do not wear the suit jacket, but white short sleeved shirts and blouses. Many schools like Sagami here have pointed collar shirts for the boys and rounded Peter Pan collars for the girls. Both children have buttoned their collar buttons, but only the girl has the neckwear. That presumably was a school rule. The boy wears grey short pants, probably a lighter weight than the winter suit shorts. The girl wears a pleated plaid suspender skirt. The boy wears the same grey kneesocks wirn during the winter. The girl wears white knee socks and strap shoes.
