Figure 1.--Here the St. Dominico children are having lunch. It looks like a muxch more civilized affair than mosdt school cafeterias. In fact the school makes lunch a serious learning experience.

The Catholic Portuguese were the first Westerners to reach Japan (16th century). The Protestants soon followed, but the Shogun's repression extinguished Christianity. The several modern private Christian schools, date from the Meiji Restoration and Japan creatiion of a modern educatiion system (1870s). Christian Schools

As was the case in many asian cioubntries. Christian missionaries played an imprtant role in building the modern public eduicatiion suste. The several modern private Christian schools, date from the Meiji Restoration and Japan creatiion of a modern educatiion system (1870s).

Environment

St. Saint Dominico begins the school day with a prayer. The School explains, "Every morning, we thank our daily lives and pray for the people of the world." On Thursday, all the children gather in the chapel to pray together. Through this time, the children will be nurtured with a warm and compassionate heart that 'is helped every day' and 'I want to help the people of the world'. In addition, 5th and 6th graders have a time to serve once a week, and someone will always be happy to care for the flowerbed, support the management of the plants that the lower class grow in the field, prepare and clean up the event, and help the kindergarteners. The school promotes a nuturing environment. It can be said that such everyday life experiences are the true value of learning and hrelp the children to become a 'loved and loved' human being, which is the motto of the school. Through education based on the Christian idea that 'the center of the world is the God of love," the School focuses on "mind education" that fosters not only learning but also kindness and compassion. .

Lunch

The children look forward to a prepared lunch three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Pn the other days they bring their lunch from h0ime. Thevschool explains, "The menu offers a wide variety of seasonal dishes using traditional ingredients from the production area, vegetables produced in the field in the school, and foreign traditional dishes. Alternatives are available one after another. Professor Namekokawa, a nutrition teacher, teaches that 'food is 'giving life' in addition to nutrition, and we always appreciate ourselves." There is also a time to wrap up the table with the different grades in the lunch room two or three times a month, which is also a place for exchange beyond the grade level. At the time of enrollment, children purchase a special cutlery set and use it according to the ingredients. "I will use a fork and knife for this dish" "Let's break the bread into bite-sized pieces" "How to hold chopsticks..." The children also learn nature and table manners.

Nature Area

There is a beautifulnature area on schoo grounds which thd children call Sudare Swamp. Wamp doesn'r really capture the area. It is not dark and damp, but actually a small pond surrounded by native vegetation. A teacher writes, "On a clear day, sunbeams reflect on the surface of the water and create a fantastic space. In the science lesson starting from elementary school 3, we will also use it as a place for hands-on learning such as observing plants and trees in each season and collecting tadpoles, medakas and crayfish that inhabit swamps." There are many valuable groundwater and spring water features around on the griunds. It is a lush environment with a variety of trees and shrun=bery. It is said that the spring water of "Sudarenuma" overflowed above the ground. The name may have originated from the name of 'Sudare Numa' with the desire of the students at that time to 'do not become obsolete', but the name gradually changed to “Sudare Numa”. The school installed a water quality management system and scaffolding for children to create a more natural environment. The structure is similar to that of today's biotope.

Composition

St. Dominico has the children write one composiution each mointh to develop their expressive and writing skills. There is an one hour writing class for all the different grades. Each grade is assined a different themes. The children are given writing paper without grid lines. The instructions are, "There is no limit on the number of characters, you can write anything that comes to your mind freely. It is also a time to look back on yourself by quietly confronting your daily life while writing and not thinking about technique." The textbook “Sakubun no Hiroba” is used in class. It is a collection of essays written by seniors, and was created with the thought that 'you can feel that there are different perspectives for the same theme'. At the end of the yeartheschool publisherd '"Jikagaki Bunshu Hibari', in which children's handwritten compositions are posted.

Uniform

The Elementary School uniform is a traditional uniform that has continued since its establishment. It includes a beret for both boys and girls showing a French influence. Thed winter uniform is very similar for boys and girls. Both wear navy blue suits with what looks like a double breasted jacket, although we don't see lapels. The boys wear white shirts and red ties. The girls do not have nedckwear and the collar of their blouse is worn over the jacket. The primary difference is the boys wear short pants and the girls a matching gym slip jumper dress or we think skirt. Both wear white knee socks. The girls wear strap shoes and the boys regular shoes. The summer uniform is a white fabric hat, the same style that has become so popular in Japan during recent years. The brim can be turned up or down. The boys wear a short sleeved shirt and grey short pants. The girls wear a white blouse with a gym-slipo jumper dress. It is the same styke as the einter jumper only done in grey and a lighter-weight material. As with the winter unifirm the color matches. Both boys and girls werar white socks, the girls with black strap shoes and the boys with regular shoes.
