Japanese Individual Private Schools Unknown Catholic School

Figure 1.-- We see a priest returing from a trip to Italy, being welcomed back by the children, we think in the 1950s. The caption reads, "My little children welcome vme after my trip to Italy and Americsa. Your charity helped me to give these little ones a pleasant pivnic." This rther suggests a carity school, but as far as we can tell, the catholic schools were not chaazrity schools or missiions as was the case in China. Here the children are on a picnic outoing to a local park. That is not the school in the background.

There are several Catholic schools in Japan. They were operating as Japan was just beginning to develop a modern education system. Despite their mostly European connections, the Japnese government alloweed them to cotinue operating during World War II. Thery continue to be an important part of Japan's private school system. Here we find a coeducatuional primary school. There may also be a secondary and kindergarten conncted. This rther suggests a carity school, but as far as we can tell, the ctholic schools were not chazrity schools or missiions as was the case in China. The children here wear sailor uniforms with a prominent cross. We do not yet know the name of the school. The sailor jackets do not have the trditonal stripe detailong tht was common at other Japanese schools. A reade writes, "If the image is from the early 1950s it is possible that the school is charity funded as the devastation after WWII was great and the post-war 'economic miracle' took a while to bear fruit." Just because it was a privte school does not mean that the students came from wealthy families. And many privte schools were dnmaged in the merucam straregic bombing. It is quite possible that Catholic schools in Japan recived charitble contributions after the Pacific War.
