Dutch School Uniform:  Chronology--The 1930s


Figure 1.--A Dutch reader sent us this photograph of himself at school in 1939. Note the photograsph of Queen Wilhelmina on the wall. Our reader tells us, "Do you notice that I have one blue eye and one brown? In this picture it is quite visible." 

Dutch boys in the 1930s appear to have worn mostly casual shirts and cshort pants to school, a least during the warmer weather. I'm less sure about the colder months. One reader send us a photograph of him at school in 1939. He wears a plaid shirt buttoned at the collar. Our reader tells us, "I don't know who's idea it was to have my shirt buttoned. Certainly not my mother's. She never much insisted what and how to wear our clothes. It might have been the teacher or the photographer. I don't remember. Boys wore both knee socks and ankle socks with shoes and sandals. A Dutch reader has provided us information on his school in the 1930s.
