New Zealand--Individual Schools: Whataki Boys High School

Figure 1.--These boys wear the everyday school outfit in 1998. Notice the different kneesocks.

Whataki Boys High School is a traditional single gender state high school at Whataki on South Island. There is also a girls' school at Whtaki. As at most New Zealand secondary schools, especially the single gender schools, a uniform is required. The boys have blazers, but generally only the older boys wear them. The typical day to day uniform is a light blue shirt, jumper, short pants, and kneesocks. If the boys want to dress up and wear a tie and long pants, they are allowed to do so.

Garments

Boys At Whataki Boys High School wear traditional school uniform garments, including blazers and ties as well as short pants and kneesocks. Caps are no llonger worn.

Caps

Boys in the 1990s did not wear caps. HBC believes that caps were probably required until the 1950s or eealy 60s, but can not conform this.

Blazer

The school blazer is red with dark colored piping. Most boys do not wear the blazer diring the school day. Some older boys do. A tie must be worn with the blazer. Boys dressing up in blazer and tie are allowed to wear long pants. HBC has noted one boy in a dark blue blazer, but is not sure what this signifies.

Tie

A tie must be worn with the blazer. Boys can also wear a tie without the blazer. Boys dreesing up with ties atre allowed to wear long pants.

Shirts

The boys wear light blue ties. Ties were not required during the ordinary school day and the shirts were worn with open collars.

Jumpers

The boys wear navy blue "V" neck jumpers with the school crest and red neck trim.

Pants

Kneesocks

HBC has noted different styles of kneesocks. The standad kneesocks had multicolor bands at the top cuff. More recent photograps show boy with solid color red and black bands at the top cuff. I am not sure what this means. The school may be changing the official style of kneesock.

Shoes

Boys wear black leather shoes.
