Argentine schools

Figure 1.-- Here we see students studying in the school library (about 1940). Notice that it was an all boys school and the boys wire sits tom school. At the time very few working-class children continued their education on to secondary school. And that is was more common for boys to continue their education.

Argentina was the most advanced country in Latin America and which in the early-20th century nearly made the transitiion from a developing to a modern, wealthy developed country. The country's education system lagged begind that of the major industrial powers, especially the public school system. Until the late 19th century, education in Argentuna was dominated by the Catholic Church and oriented toward the privildged classes. The term Nacional in the name of these schools means of course natioaal, but denotes a public (state) school. There was one major secondary school in Buenos Aires--El Colegio Nacional de la Capital founded (1863). It split into several different locations in the city (1898). One of those new schools located in the western section of Buenos Aires became what now the Colegio Nacional Mariano Moreno. These new schools were managed by the Colegio Nacional Central. In Latin America and Europe colegio (college) is a term commonly used for secondary or high schools. The school is named after Mariano Moreno who played a decisive role in the Primera Junta, the first national government of independent Argentina. Here we see students studying in the school library (about 1940). Notice that it was an all boys school and the boys wore suits to school. At the time very few working-class children continued their education on to secondary school. And that is was more common for boys to continue their education.
