Petit College: Chronology

Figure 1.--This is the 8 eme class at a school I think was called the Petit College. The portrait was taken in the 1969-70 school year. It is identified as Michaca. I'm not sure what that meant. Most but not all of the boys have the center buttoning smocks.

We know nothing about the chronology of the school. We do not know when it was founded. The school photos appear to be from the 1960s and early 70s so we know the school was functoning at this time. We have two images that are dates from the 1969-71 period. Both show a similar, but not identical uniform to the one seen here. The school is still functioning in Beirut.

Foundation

We have little information about the chronology of the school. We do know that the school was founded in 1953 by the Jesuit fathers. The school seems to have at forst offered boarding. The boarding appears to have been discontinued in 1975 and became entirely a day school. The school continues to operate today.

The 1950s

We are not sure yet about the school dress code in the 1950s. We suspct that like the 1960s and 70s that a smock was required. We note a slightly different style smock than the one seen here in an older photograph. This was probably the smock worn in the 1950s and early 60s, but we are not yet sure. It looks to have been the same color, but the collar and waistband as well as the buttoning is done differently. We also note that there seem to be school rules about what the children wear with the smock.

The 1960s

The school photos appear to be from the 1960s and early 70s so we know the school was functoning at this time. The photograph here shows the children in the 1969-70 school year. The uniform worn by the boys shows a similar, but not identical uniform to the one seen in some of the other photographs. We think the other photographs were taken earlier in the 1960s, but unfortunately are not dated. The boys here seem to have a white collar rather than a collar done in the same color as the smock. Also these smocks seem to be center rather than side buttoning. Almost all of the boys have these center buttoning smocks, but there look to be a few side-buttoning smocks as well. There is a waistband but it buttons rather than having a buckle. The boys all wear short pants and white socks, with one excetion. This suggests that there was a school requurement as to what to wear with the smock.

The 1970s

The other dated image we have is for another 8 eme class just after the one herefor the 1970-71 academic year. The boys wear the identical smock seen here. Their smocks have white collars and are center buttoning and self-belted. Again the boys wear their smocks with short pants and white socks, almost surely because of the conformity there was a school rule. There was no change in the uniform. Curiously the only difference in the smocks is that there are variations in the length.

Current Status

The school is still functioning in Beirut.
