Yugoslav Schools: Bitola Secondary School (Macedonia)

Figure 1.--We note a secondary school located in Bitola, Macedonia during 1941. This was of course during World War II. We suspect it may have been taken before the German invasion (April 1941). We do not know the name of the school, or if it had one. We know it was a secondary school, but we are not sure just what type of secondary school. Unfortunately the image has been cropped so we can not see the students in the back row.

We note a secondary school located in Bitola, Macedonia during 1941. This was of course during World War II. We suspect it may have been taken before the devestating German invasion (April 1941). The Germans closed many Yugoslav schools. We are not sure about this school. We do not know the name of the school, or if it had one. We know it was a secondary school, but we are not sure just what type of secondary school. Unfortunately the image has been cropped so we can not see the students in the back row. The students seem to be very dressed up in suits and ties, so perhaps this is a graduation photo. We are not sure ikf this was how they normally dressed. Four of the boys seem to be younger, maybe only 13 or 14, and they wear open necked shirts with their knee pants suits and black long stockings. Note that they are wearing knee pants rather than knickers. We are a little puzzled by why these four younger boys are photographed with an older class. Perhaps they were precocious. Perhaps it was a very small school. We are unsure about the boys in the back row. It seems to be a mix of younger and older boys. Notice the small child in the center, who must be a relative of one of the older boys or maybe of the teachers. Since there is a relative (the small child) in the photo, perhaps four younger boys who are wearing knee pants with black stockings are younger brothers of the class although they more likely are old enough to be in the first or second year of secondary school--about 11 or 12 perhaps. I found this photo on the Internet in a context that suggests to me that the school may be Jewish, but we arenot certain of this. If so they were probably killed within months of this portrait being taken.
