Yugoslav Schools: Strumica Primary School (Macedonia)

Figure 1.--This class photo was taken in Strumica, Macedonia, in 1950s. It looks like a class with very limited resources and very crowded. It probably reflects conditions in Yugoslavia after the War, although here they are probably bunched up for the photograph. Many of the children are barefoot. Notice that the boys and girls sit on oppoite sides of the class.

This class photo was taken in Strumica, Macedonia, in 1950s. It looks like a class with very limited resources and very crowded. It probably reflects conditions in Yugoslavia after the War. Notice that there is not a single book in site. I suspect the children, however, are bunched up like this to get them all in the photo. There are 30 children. One boy is in the front row left amongst all the girls. He doesn't look too happy about it! There are empty desks visible on the right so presumably there is room for more kids. Botice how many of the girls, but not the boys are showing off their work. Many of the children are barefoot. Notice that the boys and girls sit on oppoite sides of the class. Also notice the raw plank flooring. There was nio school uniform. The children wore their regular clothes to school. So what we see are the popuiar syles at the time in Macedoniaand probably Yugoslavia in general.
