Newtown School (Australia, 1958)

Figure 1.--This class portrait shows the 5th grade at the Newtown School in Australia during 1958. The children would have been about 11 years old. It is quite a large group, about 55 children. The school would have been a state primary. The school had a unform which most of the children wore. Many of the children wear "V"-neck sweaters, ties, and knee socks. The girls wear gym slips or skirts. The boys wear shortpants. Several children do not wear the uniform. This suggests that it was optional, but given the level of compliance ot looks like the staff did strongly promote the uniform.
