Unidentified Rural South African Primary School (2006)

Figure 1.--This is a group of students typical South African rural primary school. This seems an unusually small school. Note that all of the children are wearing uniforms. I'm unsure why all the younger children are boys. We do not know the name of the school, but believe the photograph was taken about 2006.

This is a group of students typical South African rural primary school. This seems an unusually small school. Note that all of the children are wearing uniforms. I'm unsure why all the younger children are boys. We do not know the name of the school, but believe the photograph was taken about 2006. Note how well uniformed the children are, even though this is a rural school. A reader writes, "The boys being all of the younger age could be something to do with their being segregated at a certain age or stage, rather as was the case for me at 7½ years. My infants' school (kindergarten) was an offshoot of a girls school (5 to 18) and it took in boys simply to prepare them for boys-only prep schools at 7½. Not sure it was the best preparation for an all-boys environment, although I do remember our being told to expect to be caned once we got there. They must have got the measure of us somehow!" What confused us here is that the older children are mixed and the younger children are all boys. This is not a private school, but a small rural primary. Surely there were younger girls ar the school. I'm not sure why they are not in the photograph.
