South African School Uniform: Types

Figure 1.--Here we have two photos taken at Laerskool Buffelsjagsrivier, a primary school in Buffelsjagsrivier, Western Cape Province. The photos show the 2nd and 3rd grades classes, children about 7-9 years old. The school has has two uniforms: the regular uniform (Monday, Wenesday, Friday) and the casual uniform (Tuesdays and Thursdays). The regular uniform is: Girls -- Navy blue dress; white shirt; white socks; black shoes. Boys -- Grey trousers; white shirt; grey socks; brown or black shoes. The casual uniform is: Girls -- dark blue sport shirt and skirt. Boys -- dark blue sport shirt and shorts. When wearing their casual uniforms, the schools encourages the pupils to attend barefoot (differently from the formal uniform, the footwear is not mentioned), but probably that is not compulsory. In the photos, nodobody is wearing shoes and socks. This is the 2nd grade class. Put your cursor on the image to see the 3rd grade class.

South African schools has different types of uniforms. This varies somewhat depending on the type of school. State primary schools have vary basic uniforms and thus haave fewer different types if unforms. This is especially true of the state schools with largely black children in low income communities. This varies somewhat from school to school. Private schools and secondary schools have more types of uniforms and generally stricter uniform standards. We see two types of standard uniforms, a standard uniform commonly with traditional British uniform items like sweaters, grey shirts, short pants, and knee socks, often with ties. Than we see casual uniforms with polo shirts, shorts and often bare feet for the younger children. Here we see children from a state primary wearing the school's casual uniform (figure 1). Some schools have formal uniforms with blazers and white shirts. There are also gym and sports unifoms. These are most common in private and secondary school. Actual styles have varied chronologically. The casual uniforms increasingly popular at primary schools are a relatively recent innovation.
