Scottish School Uniform: Chronologies--Early-20th Century (1900-20)

Figure 1.--Here are some schoolboys in Glasgow about 1910. Glasgow was a major port and industrial city. Notice the peaked caps and Eton collars. Also the boys are barefoot on a rainy street.

We do not at this time have any historical information on what Scottish boys wore to school during the 19th and early-20th centuries. We have begun to acquire some photographic images which provide some basic information. Many schools during that period, especially the state primary schools, did not require a school uniform. As a result the children came in their regular clothes. Further clues can be obtained by assessing the clothes worn by English boys at the time. It certainly would have been expected for the children to wear more formal clothes than is currently customary. Whether Scottish boys commonly wore kilts and thus also wore them to school, we do not know. Wearing kilts to school would depend on how common it was for boys to wear the kilt normally. Unfortunately, we have virtually no information on this. We think there may be some differences between schools in the Lowlands and Highlands. Nor do we have any good information on uniform standards at private Scottish schools during the early-20th century. There were also presumably differences betweem the state schools and the private schools. We would, however, be very interested in any historical information Scottish visitors to our web site might have.

Information

We do not at this time have any historical information on what Scottish boys wore to school during the 19th and early-20th centuries. We have begun to acquire some photographic images which provide some basic information.

School Clothes

Many schools during that period, especially the state primary schools, did not require a school uniform. We believe that private schools did requite uniforms, but not the state schools. As a result, the state school children children came in their regular clothes. We note many girls wore pinafores.

Regional Differences

There are historic cultural differences between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands. This has affected many cultural areas, including clothing. The Lowlands are much more influenced by the English than the Highlands. We think, as a result, there may be some differences between schools in the Lowlands and Highlands. We do not see kilts being worn in Lowland schools or in the two major cities, Glasgow and Edinburgh. We think that kilts were worn in the Highlands, but we do not yet have much information on this period. This was the case in the 19th century and we believe this same pattern continued in the early-20th century.

Types of Schools

The state school system began to develop in Scotland even before England. As part of the Protestant Reformation, the local kirks began supporting schools for the children. There were also well-established private schools in Scotlans. Many were called academies. Nor do we have any good information on uniform standards at private Scottish schools during the early-20th century. There were also presumably differences betweem the state schools and the private schools.
