A few Kindergartens were opened in American schools during the 19th century. The first public school Kindergarten was opened in 1870. And by the early-20th century they were becoming incereasingly common. There were Kindergardens in the 1910s, but they were not yet wide spread across the country in terms of attendance. More thn half the states had Kindergarteners, but they were not mandatory nor did all primary schools have them. Most children began primary (elementary) school with 1st grade at age 6 years which was mandatory in most states. The increasing number of Kindergarteners that did exist were opened in city primary schools. Often Kindergartners were operated on a half day basis. Kindergartners tended to be dressed a little differently than primary school children, especially the boys. They were often dressed a little differently than primary students in juvenile styles like mothers liked. They tended to be kept away from the older children. The First Graders that began primary school soon wanted to dress like the older children.
