U.S. School Clothes: Individual Schoos--Rural School (Northeastern Ohio, 1888)

Figure 1.-- Here we have a portrait from an unidentified school in Maine in 1888. It looks to be an older primary school class. Many of the children are holding slates on which they have written their names, but few or clear enough to be made out. This may have been intended not only for identification, but to show off their caligraphy. The school is a substantial brick building. Put your cursor on the image to see the rest of the class.

This cabinet card ws taken in 1888. It is a class portrait and whast a class. This teacher has 51 children to deal with. This looks like a rural school to which the photogrpher has traveled. The school was located in northeastern Ohio. While small in comprison of city schools, mny rural schools wresmller. Teeple had three sudios there (Wooster, Massillon, and Ashland), but the one which took this portrai is not specified. The children are all cammed together to fit into the portrait. They look to be children of all primary ages meaning grades 1-8. That would be 6 year old up to about 15 year olds. Sometimes a lttle older boys as farm boys commonly took longr to get through school as they missed many days to work on the farm. The younger boys are at the front and for some reason are holding their hats. Ne that do not see caps. Because they are so crammed togther that we can't see ther clothes very well. The boys are wearing suits. We see both knee pants and long pants in the front, but it is not clear what the rest of the boys are wearing with their suits. For some reason there is an unusually large number of girls with short boyish hair cuts. And we do not see girls in crisp white pinafores which were common in some schools.
