Italian School Smock Chronology: The 1960s--Collars and Bows

Italian school smocks
Figure 1.--Here we see a primary student about 9 years old as he began 4th grde in 1964. the map behind him leaves no doubt that he is Italian. He wears the classic dark blue Italian school smock with a large white Peter Pan collar and light-blue bow, a larger bow thanwev usually see.

While smocks were very common in Europe, Italian smocks were very destinctive because they were commonly worn with large white collars. Italy was not the only country where these white collars were worn, it was by far the most imprtant countries where smocks were worn with white collars. Smocks with white collars were especially popular in Italy. The collars were mostly rounded Peter Pan styles. Most of the Italian boys wearing smocks have small bows with their white collars. Generally the were light blue, but this varied. We also see red bows. We suspect that the boys were not to happy about the bows. The boys on the previous page are a good example. Notice that only one of the boys is wearing his bow properly. Here we see a 4th grade student wearing the classic darl blue Italian smock. He wears it with the large white Peter Pan collar alight-blue bow. Given that it is an individual portrait, he is done up perfectly (fgure 1). He looks very eager, in his brand new smock all ready for 4th grade.
