Spanish School Smocks: Chronology--The 20th Century--The 1910s

Spanish school smocks
Figure 1.--This Spanisg photoback postcard is undated. We suspect it was taken in the 1910s, but without destinctive stamp boxes. Spanisg cards are difficult to date. The boy is wearing a striped school smock. Notice all the teaching materials.

Our information on Spanish school smocks is still limited. We note Spanish boys wearing school smacks in the early-20th century. We not a boy wearing a striped smock at that time. We are not sure when this paractice first began. Nor do we know if the changing regimes (royal, republican, and Fascist had any impact on the wearing of smocks in Spain. Hopefully, our Spanish readers will provide us some historical informtion about school smocks in Spain. The earliest image we have is a postcard back photograoph. While undated, it looks to be from the 1900s or 10s. Postcard back images first appeared about 1903, but could be a little later in Spain. Dating European postcards is more difficult than American cards because there are far fewer destinctive stampmboxes. We see a boy who looks to be a first grader wearing a striped school smock. The image shows some of the educational materials being used at the time including an abacus and letter flash cards. . .
