German Boys Lederhosen Conventions: Casual/Leisurewear


Figure 1.--Here two German boys lounge in their back yard during the 1950s. We notice a lot of German family snapshots like this. Germans appear to enjoy sunning. The boy un front wears Lederhosen with a sweater.

Lederhosen were very flexible garment. They were not only worn for active outdoor pursuits and play, but for casual leisure wear as well. We note boys wearing Lederhosen as casual wear at home, both inside and outside. We note boys lounging at home or at informal family gatherings at home. We also notice them being worn casually for outings to parks, zoos, and other lesisure spots. Boys of all ages wore them through the 1950s, but by the 1960s older boys increasingly began wearing jeans for casual wear. his was probably more common for the pre-pteens, but we see teenagers wearing Lederhosen thenm for leisurewear, especially in the 1950s. Boys might wear Lederhosen as general liesure wear at hme or for activities like family outings to local parks.
