Figure 1.--This unidentified boy wears a kilt suit with a sailor jacket. The V-front jacket is difficult to see because it is covdered by aarge ewhite collar. The jacketr is a little inusual because it has plaid fabric matching the kilt where stripe detailing is commonlu used. The kilt skirt is dione with box pleats. We are not sure if there is an added white bow. The photographer was E. D. King in Chardon, Ohio. The portrait is undated, but looks like the late-1880s or early 90s to us.

American Sailor Styled Kilt Suit Jackets: Blouse and Jacket Styling

Many early sailor suits were a far cry from the traditional sailor suit that was to become so common. And thus we see quite a range of sailor styling used for kilt suits. Some of the these jackets are not immeditely recognizable as sailor jackets. This is in part because the only sailor feature was the "V" front which was not as well developed as it was to become and even this was sometimes covered over by the large white collars that became so popular in the 1880s. We note a variety of kilt suits done with sailor-styled tops. This has involved a variety of garments. We note both sailor blouses done in a heavy material as well as various types of jackets. We notice boys pull-over blouse done in suiting, meaning a heavy jacket material. These sailor-styled kilt suits could be quite plain. We also notice garments that looked more like jackets wehich buttoned up. This included both jackets that were made to be worn buttone up and others that were made to be worn open. The jackets made to be worn open were designed to be worn with a fancy Fauntleroy blouse. The effect is an outfit that looks like a Fauntleroy kilt suit even though the jacket is clearly done with sailor styling. The overall effect is a Fauntleroy kilt suit, but here we are discussing the jackets.

Blouses

We notice boys pull-over blouses done with sailor styling. Although done as a blouse, suiting fabric was often used. This meant a heavy jacket material. The blouse was one of the options for the kilt suit. The sailor blouses were done in many different styles, reflecting the varied sailor styling when the kilt suits first appeared. These sailor-styled kilt suit blouses could be quite plain. Others had elaborate sailor setailing. Some of ther blouses looked rather like jackets which buttoned up. Some of these blouses had very obvious blousung. Others did not particularly blouse out at the waist, but were more like shirts. Sometimes it is difficilt to differentiayte these blouse-type kilt suit from the jacket-type. This actually is a little easier than stahndard kilt suits because the sailor blouses were less like to nhave collsr buttons.

Jackets

Many early sailor suits were a far cry from the traditional sailor suit that was to become so common. This is because the kilt suit appeared before the sailor style became standardized. And thus we see quite a range of sailor styling used for kilt suits. Some did not even had stripes as one might expect. Some of the these jackets are not immeditely recognizable as sailor jackets. This is in part because the only sailor feature was the "V" front which was not as well developed as was as to eventually be the case. Sailor suyits were commonly dione in navy blue or white. With kilt suits were also see suiting material in variius patterns and colors and not the standard blue or white material.
