No Deposit, No Return - (US, 1976)

Two neglected rich children, Kim and Brad, who would rather spend Easter with their mother in Hong Kong than with their grandfather, stage their own kidnapping. The boy wears a school uniform, tan jacket and dark pants, complete with a tap cap, and long pants. No especially interesting scenes, but both he and the girl are quite sweet.

Figure 1.--This is a still from "No Greater Glory", the American version of the "Paul Street Boys".

No Greater Glory - (US, 1934)

This is a school story based loosely on "The Paul Street Boys". This is an autobiographical novel by Ferenc Molnar and set in Budapest. This American version persues the same twin themes, the pain of youth and the wasteful senselessness of war. Anti-war films were poplar in America and Britain in the 1920s and 30s. The popular premse was that war was caused by greedy arms manufacturers. As was soon to become apparent, however, the democracies by largely disarming were making themselves vulnerable to totalitarian powers tht wre arming to the hilt. Frail Nemecsek is a lonely boy who has trouble making friends. He yearns to be accepted by the boys in his class. In particular he is attracted to Boka, who has organized a gag of the local boys. By gang we mean the more benighn usage of the word popular at mid-century. A group of school boys that hung out together. The boys even have a uniform and flag. Nemecsek sees an opportunity to gain the acceptance and even admiration of the other boys when their flag is stolen by another group of boys. Nemecsek is played by George P. Breakston. Boka is played by Jimmy Butler. Gereb is played by Jackie Searl.

No Greater Love - (US, 1932)

Dickie Moore

No Greater Love - (US, 1986)

Poignant drama of Nick Santana and Keith Williams, two 12-year old boys from different backgrounds who are drawn together by their illnesses, but torn by the growing realization that they will be separated. When Nick accepts the fact that his disease is fatal, he must make a decision that could save his new friend's life.

No Where to Hide - (US, 1987)

The widow of a murdered marine struggles to save herself and her young son from Government conspirators.

Nobody's Perfect - (US, 199?)

I don't know anything about this, but apparently Chad Lowe appears dressed as a college girl.

Non-Stop New York - (England, 1937)

English child star Desmond Tester plays child violinist prodigy Arnold James who liked to play the saxophone in 'Non-Stop New York' (1937). Arnold is suposed to be abour 14-years old. Sesmond was about 18 years old at the time. He tended to playbyounger boys. This crime thriller was directed by Robert Stevenson. It is about a young woman who is the target of a murder plot. This is an early airline film. Shevis on a transatlantic flight from London to New York. Before this film, such films were always set on trains or ships. Trans-Atlantuc flifgts were very new. Desmond was dressed in a short pants suit. His overcoat was a black cap with ornate fasteners. His white shirt had large collars. His hair was curly and he wore spectacles.

None Shall Escape - (US, 1944)

"None ShallEscape" is anither American World War II film. In the film Alexander Knox plays a Nazi on trial for his war crimes. The film was completed two years before the Nuremburg trials began, so this film was rather prophetic of events to follow war's end. I've only seen it once, about twenty years ago, when TNT Channel debuted, and I haven't seen it again. I remember the film for being very realistic in its portrayal of events - the main character was really quite a fiend! There may be some good examples of uniforms and clothing from this era, as well, don't remember for sure.

Figure 2.--We know nothing about this film, not even where and when it was made. We have seen some film clips.

North - (US, 1994)

A model boy (Elijah Wood) seeks replacements for his disinterested parents. He is encouraged by Winchell (Matthew McCurley), the Machiavellian editor of the school newspaper.

Northwest Rangers - (US, 1942)

Darryl Hickman

Northernors

We know nothing about this film. We are not even where and when it was made. It does not look American. Nor do we know that "Northernors" is the actual title. We have seen some film clips. Hopefully HBC readers can provide some information about this film.

Not My Kind - (US, 1985)

A doctor and his wife discover that their 15-year old son is using drugs.

Not Quite Human - (US, 1987)

A scientist plans to prefect a teenage android that he has created by sending it to high school are threatened by villainous rivals and colleagues. The film deals with older teenagers. Disney. Jay Underwood.

Figure 3.--This is a family scene from "Novogodniy Perepoloh", a Latvian film made in 1996.

Novogodniy Perepoloh - (Latvia, 1996)

The title means approximately (difficult to translate) "A New Year Turmoil" (seems to be closest). Other translations could be: "A New Year Alarm", "A New Year Commotion", or "A New Year Flurry" or something like that. This movie was filmed in Latvian and translated into Russian and widely broadcasted during Christmas. The movie is a famnily drama set in 1935 when Latvia was an independent country--before they were invaded by the Soviet Union. The boy in the film gets into trouble and his mom makes him wear short pants and long stockings whih he objects to because he thinks that he is to old.

Nowhere to Hide - (US, 1987)

The wife of a murdered marine struggles to save herself and her young son from high-level government conspirators.

(The) Nun's Story - (US, 1959)

'The nun's story' was one of the most important film of 1959. It is a wonderful film starring Audrey Hepburn, one of her best performances. The costuming had little to concern HBC, except at the very beginning. In a scene at home before entering the convent, the future nun is pictured with her brothers and sisters. The brother is about 15 years old. He wears a grey sweater and grey shorts with knee socks pulled up to his knees. He is Richard O'Sullivan whose role is uncredited. Interestingly, Richard played a major role in the British film, 'Carry on, teacher' which was filmed the same year. For some reason, the actor students at the schoo' did not wear the uniform theat the actual students did. Richard went on to ply many roles in Britush movies and TV.

Figure 4.--MacCauly Culkin enjoyed ballet and played the Nutcracker Prince in this movie production.

(The) Nutcracker - (US, 1993)

All the children, including Macauly Caulkin, at the party which traditional begins this classic ballets. Later the Nutcracker prince (Macaully) appears in a pink knickers suit with white stockings and patent leather dance shoes.

(The) Nutcracker the Motion Picture - (US, 1986)

Supposedly dreadful rendering of the ballet. Some of the boys in the beginning part scene wear lace collars. The beginning includes boys at the party wearing velvet knicker length suits, with white stockings and especially large lace collars. The looked to be about 11-13.
