Estonian Boys' Clothes: Garments--Suits

Figure 1.--Estonian fashions seem with independence seem similar to German styles. The sailor suit was popular during the Rissin period and cintinued to be popular, if even more so, during ehe inter-War era. This Estonian boy wears a dark sailor suit in 1932. We suspect that he is an ethnic German. The hobby horse is described as a Gee-Gee toy.

We have very limited information on suits worn by Estonian boys. Our image archive is too limited to make any meaningful assessment at this time. As far as we can tell, they were essentially the same as those worn by Russian boys, perhaps with a strong German influence. There may also been a Scandinavian influence, but here German styles were also important. Our archive, however, is just too limited at this point to make any real assessments of Estonian suits.

Influences

Estonia is a very smll country. Really until the 20th century, a principality more than a country. As a result, inevitably, fashiojns will be influencd by the larger countries surrounding them, especilly Germany and Russia.

Chronology

We have very limited information on suits worn by Estonian boys. Our image archive is too limited to make any meaningful assessment at this time. As far as we can tell, they were essentially the same as those worn by Russian boys, perhaps with a strong German influence. This is embeded in Estonoan history. German influences were very strong in Baltic ports. This was a factor in Estonian turing Protestant during the Reformaion, further yieing Estonia to Scandinvia and Finln. Estonia was seized by Pter the Great during the Ftrat Northern War (1710). Thus Russian fashions became important. There may also been a Scandinavian influence, but here German styles were also important. Our archive, however, is just too limited at this point to make any real assessments of Estonian suits. After the Russian Revolution (1917), Estonoia gained its independence. At this time Germn inflences seem to reassert themselves.

Styles

We have very limited informtion on Estonian suit styles. We do have some information on Estonoan sailor suits.

Sailor suits

Sailor suits were commonly worn by Estonian boys in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We note boys wearing traditionally styled sailor suits. This included both Russian and German styles. As Estonia was part of Tsarist Russia until the Revolution (1917), the sailor suits worn by Estonian boys were similar to those worn by Russian boys. We are unsure how common sailor suits were in Estonia. They seem to have been popular with middle-clas boys in the late-19th century. We think they were mostly worn by city boys and ethnic-Germans were a major part of the the country's urban population. We are less sure about ethnic Estonian boys in the countryside. Short pants suits were common in the early-20th century. An exception was sailor suits which could be worn with either short or long pants. The popularity of sailor suits declined in the 1920s, but were still worn in the 1930s. The German influence disappeared during World war II when Hitler ordered the Baltic Germans "home to the Reich". After the War, Estonian was again absorbed in a Russian empire and styles were generally the same throughout the Soviet Union. We see Soviet boys wearing sailor suit in the intet-War era. his surprised us as the sailor suit has such a upper-class and middle-class image. After the War, however, we rarely see sailor suits, bith in Sovit Estonia and the Soviet Union at large.
