Studio Cabinet Card Mount Serrated / Pinked Edges: Corner Serration Chronology (1890-95)

Figure 1.-- Another example of the serrated edge cabinet cards with smooth corners is another American boy, Allan G. Moses, taken in 1892. The boys name and date of the portrait is located on the back.

We first noted these serrated edge cabinet cards in the mid-1880s. We continud to see rgem un the 1890s. We have found serrated / pinked cards in the early- and mid-1890s. So far we have noted these cards during 1890-95. We have found quite a few examples. We see an Omaha boy in 1890 wearing a kilt suit. We note Allan G. Moses in 1892 wearing a kilt suit. We note another serrated card of two boys in 1893. A card from Mondovi, Wisconsin was taken in 1895. This is the latest we have found so far. A portrait of a Portanlnd boy and two ladies may have been taken in 1895-96, but we can not confirm that. We have not yet found many these serrated cards in the late-1890s. We have found a portrait of the Walgren children in 1898. We are taking this as an outlyer as e haved not yet found examples from 1897. And the Walgreen cabinet card does not have the studio information which leads us to be a little suspicious as to the date. It could have been from a stock of blanks. As we acquire additional dated cards we will be able to refine our dating. We are not sure why the serrated / pinked edges were discontinued at this time. Apparently the pinking was not very popular with customers. This is about the time we begin to see many new styles of cabinet cards, none of which had the serrated edges. We note these serrated edge cards in Europoe as well, but can not yet buold a Ruropean chronology as almost all the pinked cards we have archived are American.

1890

We first noted these serrated edge cabinet cards from the mid-1880s. We continud to see them in the 1890s. We have found serrated / pinked cards in the early- and mid-1890s. So far we have noted these cards during 1890-95. We have found quite a few examples. Obviously there will be some in 1890. We see an Omaha boy in 1890 wearing a kilt suit.

1891

We have not yet found a serrated card dated 1891, but as there were 1890 and 1892 cards, there obviosly must have been some 1891 cards.

1892

1892 was right in the middlle of the period in which these pinked cabinet cards were popular. We see substanyial numbers of these caninrt cards before and after. We note Allan G. Moses in 1892, Alifornia boy wearing a kilt suit with a cut-away jacket and Fauntleroy blouse (figure 1). He hold a rounded-crown hat. We also see Nathinel and Bertha Gilpatricn, Maine children wearing identical dresses with fancy white collars in 1892. They look to be about 3 years old.

1893

We note another serrated card of two boys in 1893.

1894

We have not yet found a sserrated card dated 1894, but as there were 1895 cards, there mnust have been some.

1895

A card from Mondovi, Wisconsin was taken in 1895. This was the latest we hade found for some time. A portrait of a Portanlnd boy and two ladies may have been taken in 1895-96, but we can not confirm that. But the dress style, especially the voluminous baloon sleeves strongly suggest this.

1898

We have not yet found many these serrated cards in the late-1890s. We have found a portrait of the Walgren children in 1898. We are taking this as an outlyer as we haved not yet found examples from 1896-97 and have no examples from 1898 or the 20th century. And the Walgreen cabinet card does not have the studio information which leads us to be a little suspicious as to the date. It could have been from a stock of blanks. As we acquire additional dated cards we will be able to refine our dating parameters. >nr>

Discontinuation

We are not sure why the serrated / pinked edges were discontinued at this time. Apparently the pinking was not very popular with customers. This is about the time we begin to see many new styles of cabinet cards, none of which had the serrated edging.

Europe

We note these serrated edge cards in Europoe as well, but can not yet buold a Ruropean chronology as almost all the pinked cards we have archived are American.
