Canadian Schoolwear: Chronology--The 1910s

Figure 1.-- This school portrait camevfrom Canada. Itbis an all boy group confirming that it was Canadian. We are not surebifvthe boys are wearing knickers or knee pamts, but at least one boy looks to be wearing knickers. The presence of Fauntleroy items and the color of the mount also suggest it was taken in nthe 1900s or 1910s, probably the early-1910s. Also notice several Dutch boy haircuts. Ww would guess that they are 1st grade boys, but second graders are also possible.

Cananadian boys as in America shifted from knee pants to knickers in the 1910s. We are not sure yet about the precise time line, but suspect but that it was similar to America. This is more difficult to follow than in America because we have far fewer images available. And the images we have are mostly undated. We will do our best to date them, but invite comments from readers who may have insights to offer. We note one portrait of a group of younger boys wearing knickers which we initially thought thought was a 1920s image, in part because of the Fauntleroy items sone of the boys are wearing. It is difficult to destingush between American and Canadian images and we often have to rely on the nationality of the dealers which is not fool proof, but single gender groups are a strong indicator that the school is Canadian.
