Brazilian Schools: Escola Paroquial São José



Figure 1.--The photo was taken at the Escola Paroquial São José a parish school in Blumenau, Santa Catarina. The photograph is not sates, but looks like about the 1920s or perhaps the early-30s. The sudents seem to be mostly boys. They wear a variety of clothes. The only consistent aspect is that all the boys wear hats. We see a few caps, but not very many. We note a range of outfits, mostly suits.

Most boys wear knee pants, some extending to their calves. About half the boys are barefoot. The boys look to be mostly of European ancestry. This reflects population patterns in Santa Catarina.
