We do not yet know much about Christmas celebrations in South Africa. Since South Africa is such a diverse country, we suspect that Christmas celebrations are also very diverse and vary greatly among the different ethnic groups. As a southern hemisphere country, Christmas occurs during the warm season. Christianity and Christmas began in Europe, meaning the Northern Hemishpere. South Africa is one of several Southern Hemisphere countries that celebrate Chritmas. There are many different Christmas traditions in South Africa, both because of the many Christian denominations, but because of the many different ethnic and cultural groups that make up modern South Africa.
A reader tells us about a Christmas tradition in one community. Usually on Christmas we meet our family. So it can be sad for people without family. One group of children helps to bring a little cheer to old age pensioners. They help out at a pensioners Christmas party.
As in all Christians countries, there are ciommonly schiool parties abnd events to celebrate Christmas.
We note a Christmas school play in Paarl, Western Cape. Apparently in South Africa because of the summertime, Santa prefers to leave his boots at the North Pole.
