U.S. Boys' Bands: D.Z. Philipps Crusader Boys' Band (1925)


Figure 1.-- This publicity shows the D.Z. Phillips Boys Band. A penned date on the back dates the photograph to December 1925. D.Z. Phillips who owned the D.Z. Phillips Music Co. The boys are pictured in front of his store. He was a kind of a real life Professor Harold Hill with an actual store. Phillips organized and led the popular 'Phillips Crusaders' boys bands during the 1920s and 30s. The Crusader bands had a distinctive military-styled uniform. Phillips attracted boys to the organization by pledging to their parents to 'to make a good boy better'. The boys in the photograph are wearing coats and ties, some with overcoats as it was December. Most of the boys have standard flat caps. They also mostly wear long pants suits. That may have something to do with the band because knckers and long stockings were still very common for school-age boys in the 1920s. The studio was Anderson in Pueblo. .

Main, Pueblo, Colorado. The boys are pictured in front of the store. He was a kind of a real life Professor Harold Hill with an actual store. Phillips organized and led the popular 'Phillips Crusaders' boys bands during the 1920s and 30s. The Crusader bands had a distinctive military-styled uniform. They participated in Pueblo parades during the inter-War era. Hundreds of local boys took part in the parades and concerts. Phillips was named an honorary colonel on the staff of Colorado Gov. Ed Johnson (1934). Phillips attracted boys to the organization by pledging to their parents to 'to make a good boy better'. The boys in the photograph are wearing coats and ties, some with overcoats as it was December. Most of the boys have standard flat caps. They also mostly wear long pants suits. That may have something to do with the band because knckers and long stockings were still very common for American school-age boys in the 1920s.
