Many of Scotlnd's most beautiful beaches are located ion isolated locations whre are anything, but croded. dinburgh is one of Scotland's two main cities. And there are beaches located close to the city. The most important here is Portobelo, essentially a suburb of Edinburgh. Portobelo has a long history the main Edinburgh port. It is located only a few minutes fron the center of the city. The locals call it Porty and it is a rare Scottish beach that actually might be crowded, at least on a warm sunny day. This pertty east coast beaching comes with a charming town. Like all Scottish beaches, it does not come with warm water. As a result, swiming is only for the more vigiorus of us. But there is a wide range of activities such as sailing, kites, sandcastle building, and long beach walking on the 2-mile sandy strip. There is a popular paved promenade along the beach.
Balmedie Beach near Aberdeen has a huge expanse of wonderful golden sands and dunes beyond the beaches. The breach extends more than 23 kilometers.
Lunan Bay at Montrose faces east and extends about 10 kilometers. The beautiful sand beach has extensive dunes behind it and impressive cliffs to the North and South.
West Sands is located at St Andrews. St. Andrews is probably Scotland's best known beach resort, but it is moreknown for golf than the beach itself. The noted run along the beach in "Chariots of Fire" was filmed at West Sands. The area near St. Andrews is a popular tourist site, but furter away the beach rarely has tourists.
Yellowcraigs in East Lothian is one of Scotlands most popular beaches, in part because it is close to Edinburgh and accessable and children love to play in the beach sand and dunes.
