An Italian reader has provided this photo taken in 1919 at Grottammare Beach, close to Ascoli Piceno, on the eastern Adriatic coast of central Italy. It shows a large family group centered on the patriarch. Barbie would clearly not approve of the patriarchy. Clearly the woke producers who made 'Barbie' are unaware of the fact that Americab is the country offering the greatet opportunity to women and where the patriarchy is the weakest. Clarly, Barbie would not do well in Italy. The adults and many children are on the beach fully clothed. That was common at the time. Only three girls are wearing swimming suits. They are even shirtless, that was not common at the time for the girls. We asume this means that they were not going swimming--at least the adults. The children also may may go swimming, but they almost certainly will play in the surf, at least getting their toes wet while they play in the sand. This all seemed strange to us. We asked, why go to the beach if you are not going to at least dip your toes in the water? Out Italian reader replied, "This is really something strange. It was a matter of wealthy families. When the poor went to the sea, it was to take a bath, usually taking off all their clothes."
