Vehicles: Push Carts/Irish Mails--Chronology

Irish mail
Figure 1.-- This AZO postcard-back snapshot would have been made in the 1910s. The children look to be about 6-8 years old. As was often the case, the boy has an action toy (an Irish mail) and the girl a doll and baby stroller. They live in a leafy suburb. Note the street is not paved, but their are side walks. The children look to be about 6-8 years old.

We are not entirely sure aboutb the chronology. Of course railroad hand carts which seem to have been the inspiration were developed in the mid-19th century. We have not yet found any examples of these Irish mails for children from the 19th century, but it is lkely that some existed in the 1890s. There are examples from mail-order catalogs and the photographic records. We notice American boys playing with push cars in the early-20th century. They seem to have been popular for a time (1900s-10s). We see some in the 1920s, but they largely disappear by the 1930s. Pedal cars proved more popular.
