Argentine First Communion White Suits: Garments

Figure 1.-- This unidentified Argentine boy was photographed in hisFirst Communion suit, wevthink in the late-1950s. He wears a white single breasted short pants suit with white knee socks and shoes. Note the white gloves and white shoulder bow. Click on the image to see a view of the paty after the service.

The principal suit items were the jacket and pants. Boys unlike the girls did not have headwear. We notice various jacket styles. Some jackets were rather long. The jacket the boy here is wearing seemd rather long (figure 1). This does not seem to have been a common style. Most were of the jackets were of normal length. We see several different jacket styles. There were Eton jackets, single-breasted, and double-breasted jackets of course with many varied elements. The white suis were done with both short and long pants. The short pants seem most common, although this varied over time. Hosiery and shoes completed the outfit. The short pants white suits were often worn with white knee sovks which were seen as more formal than white ankle socks. We do not see long stockings to any extent. Of course hosiery is not apparent for the boys wearing long pants. We note boys wearing both white and black shoes with white suits. They are all low-cut leathr oxford-style shoes. The shoes seem to be the only item worn with these white suits that was not always white. The hosiery and shoes of course were not part of the suit, but could make a big difference in overall appearance.
