White suits were very common in the 1920s. We note a First Communion class--both boys and girls--taken at St. James's Church, St. Louis, in 1929. The outfits are all white. The boys wear white shirts and knickers, white long stockings, and white shoes. The girls wear junior white wedding dresses. The children seem quite young--perhaps 7 or 8 years old. We at first thought this was a class in a Catholic school doing First Communion, but the photograph was labeled "St. James Church" rather than "St. James School". We were not sure if this Church did not have a school or the Church put the church name rather than the school name. Of course Catholic schools are normally attached to a church and have the same name as that churh. We have since learned that indeed there was a St. James School, the school just chose to label the photograph with the church name rather than the school name.
