The painting depicts the artist's mother, Katherine Cassatt, sitting by a window and holding a red book, reading to three of her grandchildren who surround her and are enjoying the book. A boy sits aat her knees and faces her while two girls stand on either side of her. The boys seems to be wearing a checked sailor tunic. A window amd country settinh is behind them. We have seen different dates for the poortrait, both 1880 and 88.
