Stephen Poyntz Denning: Unisigned Work (England, 1820?)

Stephen Poyntz Denning

Figure 1.--Some of Denning's painting are mediocre. And this one is a good example. It is a painting depicing twe unidentified chldren, certainly siblings. The boy wears an orange tunic suit with matching pants, probably painted about 1820. It is useful for our study of fashion, but is a very basic work, probably painted early in his career. The girl wears a white dress, but not an Empire style. Empire-cut dreses, popular at the turn of the 19th century were also usually white, but had slim cut skirts.

We have found a few works by English portrtist Stephen Poyntz Denning (1795-1864). This is an early unsigned work, but attibuted to him. Some of Dennings's painting are mediocre. And this one is a good example. It is a painting depicing two unidentified chldren, certainly siblings. The boy wears an orange tunic suit with matching pants, probably painted about 1820. It is useful for our study of fashion, but is a very basic work, probably painted early in his career. Notice that skeleton suits (except for red worn by yonger stocrtic boys were generally done in muted, earhy colors. Tunic suits cold be done in a range of bright colors, at least in the early-19th century. The girl wears a white dress, but not an Empire style. Empire-cut dreses, popular at the turn of the 19th century were also usually white, but had slim cut skirts.
