Artists Illustrating Boys' Fashions: Austria, Josef Grassi (1757-1838)

 Josef Grassi
Figure 1.--This is a portrait of Stanislaw Kostka Zamoyski with his wife, Zofia (née Czartoryska), and their family. The children are not named, but look like four boy and a girl, not including the baby. Notice the boys all wear long pants. The boys' uniforms are interesting given that Poland no longer existed as a country as a result of the Polish Partitions. Mother and daughter wear white empire dresses. Count Stanisław Kostka Zamoyski (1775 – 1856) was a Polish nobleman, politician, landowner, and patron of the arts. The portrait would have been painted about 1810. This would have been during the Napoleonic Wars, We are not sure who the artist was. Some sources suggest French artist Sebastian Ludwik Wilhelm Norblin (1796–1884), but the dates are not right. We think the artist may have been Austrian portraitist Josef Grassi, but we are not sure. We welcome reader comments on this.

Józef was born in Udine (1757). This is a town in northeastern Italy, at the time part of the Austrian Empire. He studied at the Viennese Akademie (1768). He became a society portraitist, working primarily in oil and also produced miniatures. He seems to have has a connection with Poland which during his life time was absorbed into Prussia and Russia, although Austria got a small slice as part of the Polish Patitions. He seems to have has connections in Polish circles. He worked in Warsaw (1791–95) before returning to Vienna. Gassi appears to have done a nmber of Polish portraits. Although a Austrian subject, he seems to have gravitated to what would become Germany--not yet unified. He was in Dresden (1797). He was appointed Professor at the Akademie (1800). He spent a year at Gotha in Thuringia (1804). He visited Rome twice (1808–10 and 1816–21). He became director of studies in Italy for artists from Saxony before returning to Dresden. He was especially praised for his female portraits.
