English artist Jessica Hayllar was noted for depicting domestic scenes, often with children. As a result we also have images showing the inide of middle-class Victorian homes. She loved flowers, but at first did not want to just paint flowers. So she just imserted brightly colored floweres into her paintings. Jessica was born in Lonmdon (158). Her father was artist James Hayllar (1829-1920). She was the eldest of nine children. She and her sisters, Kate and Mary, Jessica were drawn into painting at home by her father. Their father was steeped in Pre-Raphaelite realism and coloring and his daugters followed in their father's footsteps. Hayllar first exhibited (1879). She exhibited at the Royal Academy (1880-1915). She was especially active (1885-1900). She generally painted quiet domestic scenes and that charmingly depicted ordinary experiences. She ordinarily painted indoors at her father's house, Castle Priory in Wallingford on the Thames. Hayllar was seriously injured in an accident (1900). For some reason she changed her subject matter, shifting to painting only flowers. She especially was drawn to Azaleas.
