This Hoare's portrait is the children of the 2nd Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne, Henry, Thomas. and John (1762). The boys are all dressed alike with red frock jackets done with gold piping and frogging and matching red knee breeches (figure 1). The only difference is the second longer jackets that they are wearing are done in different colors. Their outfits are not juvenile styles. Their father would have worn similar styles. Only probably not red. Aristiocrats still had real power in Britain. The 2nd Duke of Newcastle was a very powerful figure. He was appointed to the Privy Council (1768). Most notably, the 2nd Duke used his influence to promote the career of his cousin -- Sir Henry Clinton, a career army officer. The Duke convinced King George III to appoint Sir Henry to be appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in America during the American Revolution (1776-83). Thomas seen here was the aide-de-camp to Sir Henry.
